The Area

Bemm Village

The popular fishing village of Bemm River sits on the shores of Sydenham Inlet which is feed by the Bemm River with it’s catchment coming down from the many mountain streams of the Far East Gippsland hills. Bemm River hosts many Angling Clubs and Fishing Competitions; including the increasingly popular Hobie Fishermen & Women.

Despite development in other coastal towns, Bemm River remains quiet and tranquil; most of the year!  A place many come to sit, fish and recharge. Make sure you FILL UP the Car and Boat before you head down to the Bemm –  NO FUEL is available in Bemm River. Phone reception is generally only available with Telstra and TV Reception is via satellite.

Bemm River Bait & Tackle is open seven days a week  providing basic necessities including daily papers, fishing licences, phone recharge, grocery items,  ice and of course bait, tackle and all things Fishing.

The Bemm River Hotel was opened in 2000 on the site of the old hotel which was burnt down in 1994. This is the great social hub for this small community. They offer great meals, cold beer and good coffee 7 days a week. This is also the designated Safer Place in an Emergency.

Luderick Point opposite the hotel on the shore of Sydenham Inlet is an attractive park ideal for family gatherings and letting the kids cut loose on the play equipment. Free electric BBQ’s, water fountain, picnic tables, a war memorial and a great view of the lake. There is always plenty of bird life including many pelicans.

The River

Bemm River and Sydenham Inlet is a fragile river system arguably the least disturbed in Victoria. It is a treasure that has resisted development.

The banks of Bemm River are a great place to picnic, watch for wildlife and just generally relax. There will be plenty of bird life and perhaps an elusive platypus.

Dolly’s Garden is accessed just opposite the recreation park and provides a toilet and picnic table. These photo’s were taken within 100 metres of the picnic site. This is a few minutes walk from the caravan park.

Of course there is always fishing. For comprehensive fishing information check out the Bemm River Angling Club’s website

They suggest:

River Fishing

There are several places to access the river by walking including at the back of the farm through the walk way provided, from the road into town at dolly’s garden, from the track at the barrel drain on the road into town and from around the bridge. Above the waterfall near the bridge, the river is fresh water and trout and bass are sought in some of the rugged upstream valleys.

Beach Fishing

Surf or rock fishing is possible south west of the town by a short road trip toward Pearl Point or by boating across the inlet to the channel and surf fishing at the blowhole or at the mouth of the inlet channel.
